What is Butacort (Budesonide) used for?

Butacort Nasal Spray (Budesonide) is used to help treat and prevent the symptoms of allergies, such as nasal congestion, runny nose, itchiness and sneezing. This drug is also used to prevent nasal polyps from returning after they have been surgically removed. It belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids, which work by helping to reduce inflammation of the nasal passages.

How should I use Butacort (Budesonide)?

Butacort Nasal Spray (Budesonide) should be sprayed directly into the nose. Patients should gently blow their nose before applying this spray. The nozzle can then be inserted into the nostril and the spray administered. Patients should only administer the dosage prescribed to them by their physician. Adults are often directed to deliver 1 or 2 sprays into each nostril once or twice per day. Some patients will notice this medication working 1 to 2 days after using it, however it may take up to 2 weeks before the full benefits of this nasal spray are felt.

What are the side effects of Butacort (Budesonide)?

Some side effects which have been reported by patients taking Butacort Nasal Spray (Budesonide) include:

  • Nasal irritation
  • Dryness in the throat
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Nosebleeds
  • Sores or white patches in or around the nose

Consult your physician immediately if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if you notice a loss of taste or smell, sores in the nose that won't heal, severe nose bleeds, breathlessness, changes in vision or fever.
