What is Cafergot (Ergotamine/Caffeine) used for?

Cafergot (Ergotamine/Caffeine) is used to prevent certain types of headaches, such as migraine headaches and cluster headaches. It contains two active ingredients, which work together to relieve these symptoms. Ergotamine works by narrowing blood vessels in the head which may have widened, thereby reducing the throbbing associated with these types of headaches. The caffeine in this medication helps to enhance and strengthen the effects of ergotamine by increasing the amount of ergotamine absorbed.

How should I use Cafergot (Ergotamine/Caffeine)?

Cafergot (Ergotamine/Caffeine) should be taken orally, and may be taken with or without food. This drug is only taken as required, and should not be used as a long term treatment. If the headache does not go away after taking the first tablet, patients may take an additional tablet 30 minutes after the first dose. In case additional doses are required, you may continue to take 1 tablet every 30 minutes, however you should not exceed 6 tablets for a single migraine attack, and not more than 10 tablets in any 7 day period.

What are the side effects of Cafergot (Ergotamine/Caffeine)?

You should immediately consult your physician if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if any other more serious side effects occur, such as a tingling sensation, numbness, blue colored hands or feet, muscular pain, severe stomach pain, back pain, a slow heartbeat, changes in vision or slurred speech.
