What is Cosopt (Timolol Maleate/Dorzolamide Hydrochloride) used for?

Cosopt (Timolol Maleate/Dorzolamide Hydrochloride) contains two active ingredients, and is used in the treatment of eye conditions such as glaucoma and ocular hypertension. This medication is often used by patients when treatment with other medication has proven unsuccessful. Its active ingredients include timolol maleate and dorzolamide hydrochloride.

Timolol is a type of medication known as a beta blocker, and dorzolamide is a type of anhydrase inhibitor. They help to reduce eye pressure inside the eye by reducing the production of fluids by the eye, thereby helping to prevent blindness.

How should I use Cosopt (Timolol Maleate/Dorzolamide Hydrochloride)?

Patients should administer one drop of Cosopt (Timolol Maleate/Dorzolamide Hydrochloride) eye drops into the affected eye or eyes twice daily, or as directed by their physician. You should tilt your head backwards and look upwards, and pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch. One drop may then be placed into the pouch. To help prevent the medication from dripping out of the eye, you should press gently in the corner of the eye, next to the nose, and close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes.

What are the side effects of Cosopt (Timolol Maleate/Dorzolamide Hydrochloride)?

Some side effects which may occur as a result of using Cosopt (Timolol Maleate/Dorzolamide Hydrochloride) include:

  • Headache
  • An unusual taste in the mouth
  • Sensitivity of the eyes to light
  • Itching or burning sensation in the eyes
  • Blurred vision

Patients should consult their physician if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if any other more serious side effects occur, such as inflammation of the eyelids, discharge from the eyes, breathlessness, an increase in weight or signs of fever.
