What is Emla (Lignocaine/Prilocaine) used for?

Emla (Lignocaine/Prilocaine) is a topical cream, used as a local anesthetic. It contains 2 active ingredients, both of which are amide-type local anesthetics. This cream is applied to unbroken skin or the outside of the penis or vagina, to reduce or prevent pain from surgical procedures, such as inserting a medical instrument, administering an injection, skin grafts, removal of genital warts or other procedures. This cream works by temporarily numbing the skin.

How should I use Emla (Lignocaine/Prilocaine)?

Emla (Lignocaine/Prilocaine) is applied only to normal skin or the genital area. It should never be applied to skin that is broken or open wounds. This cream is usually applied 1 hour prior to injections or insertion of medical instruments, or else 2 hours before skin procedures. Your physician may wish to apply it before carrying out the procedure. Your skin may remain numb for a number of hours after the procedure. Patients should be careful not to injure the skin during this time.

What are the side effects of Emla (Lignocaine/Prilocaine)?

Emla (Lignocaine/Prilocaine) may cause side effects, such as:
