What is Imodium (Loperamide Hydrochloride) used for?

Imodium (Loperamide Hydrochloride) is given as a treatment for diarrhea (and also traveler's diarrhea). It may also be given to patients who have undergone an ileostomy, to reduce the amount of stools discharged. This medication works by slowing down the digestion rhythm and bowel movements, thereby giving the small intestines more time in which to absorb nutrients and fluid from food.

How should I use Imodium (Loperamide Hydrochloride)?

Imodium (Loperamide Hydrochloride) capsules are taken orally, usually straight after each loose movement of the bowels. Patients may also be told to take it on a schedule, usually once per day, or sometimes more. Your physician will inform you of the dosage required, based on the severity of your condition. It is also important to drink plenty of water in order to replace fluids lost as a result of diarrhea. Call your physician if you don't notice an improvement in your symptoms within 2 days, or within 10 days if you are treating chronic diarrhea.

What are the side effects of Imodium (Loperamide Hydrochloride)?

Some patients taking Imodium (Loperamide Hydrochloride) may notice:

  • Dryness in the mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach distention
  • Constipation
  • Tiredness

You should see your physician if any of these side effects worsen.

Please Note

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Imodium (Loperamide Hydrochloride). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.
