What is Lithium Carbonate (Lithium Carbonate) used for?

Lithium Carbonate (Lithium Carbonate) is used as a mood stabilizer to treat the symptoms of manic depressive (bipolar) disorder. It works by interfering with the production and uptake of the chemical messengers which nerves use to communicate with each other, commonly known as neurotransmitters. This drug can help to diminish the intensity and frequency of episodes of mania occurring in bipolar patients. Common symptoms of mania include aggression, hostility, anger, hyperactivity, elation and rapid loud speech.

How should I use Lithium Carbonate (Lithium Carbonate)?

Lithium Carbonate (Lithium Carbonate) capsules are taken orally. Patients may be directed to take 2 to 3 doses per day, however this may vary depending on the patient's medical history. Therefore, patients should always consult their physician so that the correct dosage can be prescribed. It is important to drink plenty of water while taking this medication. The effects of lithium usually start one week after taking it, and the full benefits are noticed 2 to 3 weeks after the patient has started taking it.

What are the side effects of Lithium Carbonate (Lithium Carbonate)?

Some side effects which may be noticed by patients while taking Lithium Carbonate (Lithium Carbonate) include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Hand movements that are difficult to control
  • Increased sensitivity to cold weather
  • Joint or muscle pain

Other side effects include acne, hair loss, weight gain, weight loss or decrease in appetite. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, you should consult your physician immediately.
