What is Mexitil (Mexiletine Hydrochloride) used for?

Mexitil (Mexiletine Hydrochloride) is a treatment for serious irregular heartbeat conditions such as ventricular tachycardia. This drug is a type of anti-arrhythmic drug, which can restore normal heart rhythm by blocking the electrical signals in the heart that cause an irregular heartbeat. By helping to maintain a steady, regular heartbeat, this drug reduces the risk of blood clots, strokes and heart attacks. This drug is also prescribed to treat the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in diabetic patients.

How should I use Mexitil (Mexiletine Hydrochloride)?

The dosage for Mexitil (Mexiletine Hydrochloride) depends on the patient's age, liver function and other factors. It comes as a capsule, which is taken orally, normally 3 times per day at 8 hour intervals. However, other patients may be directed to take it twice per day, at 12 hour intervals after a physician decides that this drug can control their arrhythmias. Patients may be sent to hospital when beginning treatment with this drug, so that their condition can be monitored while they take this drug. If you stop taking this medication, your condition could become worse.

What are the side effects of Mexitil (Mexiletine Hydrochloride)?

Side effects of Mexitil (Mexiletine Hydrochloride) may include the following:

  • Appetite changes
  • Uncontrolled shaking
  • Blurred vision
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty talking

Although you will most likely be closely monitored when you first start taking this drug, it is still necessary to immediately inform a physician if any serious side effects occur.
