What is Polycap (Simvastatin/Ramipril/Atenolol/Hydrochlorothiazide/Aspirin) used for?

Polycap (Simvastatin/Ramipril/Atenolol/Hydrochlorothiazide/Aspirin) is a combination of 5 active ingredients in one capsule. Two ingredients are blood pressure reducing drugs, one is a statin (cholesterol reducing drug), another is a diuretic (water pill) and the last ingredient is aspirin. This drug is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients, and to prevent strokes and heart disease in patients at risk of this occuring.

Atenol is a beta blocker that blocks the action of epinephrine on the heart and blood vessels. This can reduce the strain on the heart and lower blood pressure. Ramipril is an ACE inhibitor that relaxes the blood vessels and allows the blood to flow more easily. Simvastatin helps to lower triglycerides and bad cholesterol while also raising blood levels of good cholesterol.

Together with the above ingredients, aspirin (a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID) is added for its antiplatelet effects to help prevent blood clots. Hydrochlorothiazide is a type of diuretic, or water pill which helps the body to get rid of excess water and salt.
