What is Topamax (Topiramate) used for?

Topamax (Topiramate) is used to treat and control seizures in patients suffering from epilepsy. It may also be used to treat seizures caused by Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. This drug treats seizures by reducing unusual activity in the brain. It may also be used to prevent migraine headaches, however it may not relieve pain caused once a migraine occurs.

How should I use Topamax (Topiramate)?

Topamax (Topiramate) tablets are normally taken twice per day, in the morning and again in the evening. However, the dosage can vary for each patient, and in order to determine the correct dosage, you must consult your physician. You may be told to take a low dose to begin with, which your physician may then gradually increase. You should not suddenly stop taking this drug unless told to do so by your physician, as patients who suddenly stop taking it may experience seizures. Your physician may need to gradually reduce your dosage.

What are the side effects of Topamax (Topiramate)?

Side effects of Topamax (Topiramate) include:

  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Tingling sensation affecting the hands and feet
  • Hair loss
  • Unusual hair growth
  • Nosebleeds

If you experience any other more serious side effects, such as blurred vision, stomach pain or appetite loss, you should immediately consult your physician.

Please Note

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Topamax (Topiramate). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.
