What is Virgan (Ganciclovir) used for?

Virgan (Ganciclovir) is a type of gel that is used in the treatment of eye inflammation occurring as a result of the herpes virus. This cream interferes with viral multiplication in the eye, and prevents the virus from invading cells that are already healthy. By preventing the reproduction of the virus, this gel makes it easier for the body to overcome the virus.

How should I use Virgan (Ganciclovir)?

Virgan (Ganciclovir) is applied directly to the affected eye or eyes as directed by your physician. Patients are usually told to apply one drop into the affected eye five times per day, until the eye heals. After it heals, you may be told to apply it three times per day for one week. The total course of treatment normally lasts for 21 days. However, follow all directions provided to you by your physician.

The gel is applied in a similar way to eye drops. You should pull down the lower eyelid and squeeze the tube, and release one drop into the eyelid. After applying it, you should blink to spread the gel across the eye. You may press the corner of the eye, next to the nose for 1 to 2 minutes after you apply the gel. This can prevent the gel from being drained away too quickly. Repeat for the other eye if necessary.

What are the side effects of Virgan (Ganciclovir)?

Patients using Virgan (Ganciclovir) may notice:

  • Blurred vision
  • Tingling or burning of the eye
  • Redness around the eye
  • Irritation
  • Slight inflammation of the eye
