What is Acivir (Acyclovir) used for?

Acivir (Acyclovir) is a type of antiviral medication that is used to inhibit the growth and advancement of the herpes virus. This allows the body to fight the infection, as well as lessening the symptoms of infection. It can also treat illnesses caused by the herpes virus, such as shingles, chicken pox, cold sores and genital herpes. It is important to note that this drug will only provide relief from the symptoms of herpes, but will not cure the herpes virus.

How should I use Acivir (Acyclovir)?

If taken to treat an outbreak, you may be directed to take it for 5 to 10 days, starting as soon as possible after your symptoms begin. Patients taking this drug to prevent outbreaks of herpes may need to take it for up to 12 months. Always follow the directions of your physician while taking this medication and never exceed the prescribed dosage.

What are the side effects of Acivir (Acyclovir)?
