What is Apo-Clomipramine (Clomipramine Hydrochloride) used for?

Apo-Clomipramine (Clomipramine HCL) is a type of medication known as a tricyclic antidepressant. It is used to treat the symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), such as recurrent thoughts, compulsions, repetitive hand washing, counting and checking. These symptoms can interfere with daily living. By helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain, such as serotonin, this drug helps to reduce compulsions and other symptoms caused by OCD. Recent medical research has shown that this drug has benefits in treating premature ejaculation.

How should I use Apo-Clomipramine (Clomipramine Hydrochloride)?

Apo-Clomipramine (Clomipramine HCL) tablets should be taken orally, with or without food. In order to avoid stomach upset, it is common for physicians to direct patients to take a low dose, which is often given in several smaller doses throughout the day, together with meals, and to gradually increase the dosage over time so that the body can get used to the medication. Once the correct dosage has been reached by the patient, the physician may then direct the patient to take one dose daily, at bedtime. The maximum dosage for adults is usually 250mg per day, whereas for children it is normally 200mg per day. You should always follow the directions of your physician and never exceed the dosage prescribed to you.

What are the side effects of Apo-Clomipramine (Clomipramine Hydrochloride)?

Some side effects which may occur as a result of taking Apo-Clomipramine (Clomipramine HCL) include:

• Constipation
• Nausea
• Changes in weight or appetite
• Flushing, perspiration or blurred vision

Patients should note that this medication may cause anxiety symptoms to worsen temporarily when they first start taking this medication. Consult your physician immediately if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if you notice depression, mood changes, enlarged breasts, unwanted breast milk production, painful menstrual periods, twitching, muscle stiffness, ringing in the ears, impotence, tremors, numbness of the limbs or severe vomiting.
