What is Aromasin (Exemestane) used for?

Aromasin (Exemestane) is used to treat certain types of breast cancer in women who have gone through the menopause. This drug may help to slow the growth of breast tumors by lowering the levels of estrogen in the body. Women whose cancer has progressed after taking other drugs, such as tamoxifen, are often prescribed this drug.

How should I use Aromasin (Exemestane)?

Aromasin (Exemestane) tablets are taken orally, usually once per day. These tablets may be taken with food, or as prescribed by your physician. However, the dosage may vary, depending on the severity of the condition being treated, and the patient's response to treatment. Therefore, it is essential to consult your physician before taking this medication so that the correct dosage can be prescribed.

What are the side effects of Aromasin (Exemestane)?

Some side effects which have been reported by patients taking Aromasin (Exemestane) include:

  • Hot flushes
  • Muscular pain or fatigue
  • Unusual perspiration
  • Loss of hair
  • Insomnia

Other more serious side effects may occur as a result of taking this medication. Immediately consult your physician if you notice pain in the bones, changes in vision, swollen feet or hands, breathlessness, pain in the chest or problems with balance.

Please Note

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Aromasin (Exemestane). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

This medication is normally only used by post menopausal women. If you have not gone through the menopause yet, and your physician has prescribed this medication for you, discuss the use of non-estrogen forms of birth control with your physician, as estrogen containing birth control products may not be effective. Consult your physician immediately if you become pregnant, or if you think you are pregnant.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
