What is Azilect (Rasagiline Mesylate) used for?

Azilect (Rasagiline Mesylate) is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitors, which work by helping to increase the levels of certain chemicals in the brain. This drug may also be prescribed to patients together with another drug known as levodopa.

How should I use Azilect (Rasagiline Mesylate)?

Azilect (Rasagiline Mesylate) tablets should be taken orally. Patients should consult their physician before taking this medication, so that the correct dosage can be prescribed. This drug is commonly taken once daily. It is important not to miss any doses while undergoing treatment with this medication. As this medication is used as part of a treatment program which also includes a diet plan, patients are advised to follow the instructions of their physician at all times. While taking this medication, and for 2 weeks after taking it, patients may not be able to eat certain types of cheese. Do not abruptly discontinue taking this medication once you have started taking it, as this may cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. What are the side effects of Azilect (Rasagiline Mesylate)?

Some side effects which have been reported by patients taking Azilect (Rasagiline Mesylate) include:

  • Loss of appetite or dryness in the mouth
  • Headaches or dizziness
  • Diarrhea, nausea, constipation or vomiting
  • Decreased sexual ability
  • Loss of hair

Other side effects include strange dreams, flu symptoms, and joint pain. Consult your physician immediately if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if you notice high blood pressure, changes in hearing, buzzing in the ears, sudden weakness in the body, tremors, hallucinations, fever, fast heartbeats or seizures.
