What is Efudix (Fluorouracil) used for?

Efudix (Fluorouracil) is a type of topical cream which is applied to the skin as a treatment for skin growths such as solar keratoses or actinic keratoses. It is also used to treat a type of skin cancer known as superficial basal cell carcinoma. The active ingredient in this cream is in a class of drugs known as antimetabolites, which work by preventing the growth of and killing abnormal cells responsible for causing skin conditions.

How should I use Efudix (Fluorouracil)?

Patients who are using Efudix (Fluorouracil) cream to treat skin conditions are sometimes told to apply it to the areas affected twice per day. The length of time for which treatment is required varies, depending on the condition being treated. Patients treating solar or actinic keratoses should continue treatment until the lesions begin to peel off, usually 2 to 4 weeks after treatment. However the lesions may not fully heal until 1 to 2 months after you stop using this cream. If you are treating basal cell carcinoma, it normally takes 3 to 6 weeks for the lesions to disappear, however, in some cases it may take 10 to 12 weeks. Follow all instructions provided to you by your physician.
