What is Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) used for?

Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) is prescribed as a treatment for hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid). An underactive thyroid can cause loss of hair, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, poor growth and other symptoms. These symptoms are usually caused by a lack of thyroid hormone. This drug works by replacing the hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland. Other conditions it treats include an enlarged thyroid and congenital hypothyroidism.

How should I use Eltroxin (Levothyroxine)?

Patients who have been prescribed Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) tablets should follow the instructions of their physician. This drug is sometimes taken once per day, on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before eating breakfast. Your physician may start you out on a low dosage, and gradually increase your dosage. It may take several weeks for the full benefits of this medication to be noticed.

What are the side effects of Eltroxin (Levothyroxine)?

Patients taking Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) may notice side effects, such as:

  • Loss of weight
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety, increased perspiration or insomnia
  • Hair loss
  • Increased sensitivity to heat

Report all side effects to your physician. If you notice any other more serious side effects, you should immediately seek medical attention.

Please Note

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Eltroxin (Levothyroxine). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.
