What is Famtrex (Famiciclovir) used for?

Famtrex (Famiciclovir) is an antiviral drug which is used as a treatment for herpes zoster (shingles), fever blisters or herpes virus outbreaks. It is also given to patients infected with HIV as a treatment for returning herpes simplex infections of the mucus membranes, such as the anus and mouth. The active ingredient in this drug stops the herpes virus from spreading in the body. It will not cure the herpes virus, but it can reduce the symptoms of herpes outbreaks.

How should I use Famtrex (Famiciclovir)?

Famtrex (Famiciclovir) tablets should be taken orally, and may be taken with or without food. Follow the instructions provided to you by your physician. If you are taking it to treat shingles, you may be told to take it 3 times per day, every 8 hours for a period of one week. Treatment is most effective if started within 3 days of the rash appearing. Treatment of blisters and cold sores may consist of one dose taken at the earliest occurrence of symptoms.

Patients treating genital herpes are sometimes told to take it twice per day, usually at the first signs of symptoms, and may be told to take it twice per day for an extended period of time, sometimes as long as a year. This helps to prevent the herpes from returning. Patients with HIV treating herpes infections may be told to take it twice per day for 7 days. Never take more than the amount prescribed by your physician.

What are the side effects of Famtrex (Famiciclovir)?

Famtrex (Famiciclovir) may cause:

  • Gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Itchiness
  • Fatigue
  • Menstrual period pain

You should consult your physician immediately if you notice burning, pain or numbness in the feet or hands.

Please Note
