What is Hiprex (Methenamine Hippurate) used for?

Hiprex (Methenamine Hippurate) is a type of antibiotic which is given to patients in order to eliminate the bacteria which cause urinary tract infections. It may be given to patients suffering from chronic infections as a long term treatment, and to help prevent recurring infections.

How should I use Hiprex (Methenamine Hippurate)?

Hiprex (Methenamine Hippurate) tablets should be taken orally. You may be told to take it twice per day, at 12 hour intervals, or 4 times per day, after meals and just before going to bed. Your physician will inform you of the dosage required and the length of time for which treatment is required. You should not take more or less than the amount prescribed to you. This medication is more effective if the acidity level of your urine is higher. Your physician may suggest ways for you to increase the acidity of your urine.
