What is Imatib (Imatinib) used for?

Imatib (Imatinib) is given as a treatment for certain types of leukemia, such as chronic myeloid leukemia and other cancers of the blood cells. It is also used to treat gastrointestinal stromal tumors, stomach tumors and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, which is a type of tumor under the top layer of skin. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as protein-tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which work by inhibiting the action of the protein that helps cancer cells to multiply, which in turn helps to stop the spread of cancerous cells.

How should I use Imatib (Imatinib)?

Patients should take Imatib (Imatinib) tablets orally, with a meal and a glass of water, exactly as prescribed by their physician. Adults are sometimes prescribed one or two tablets per day, however the dosage required varies for each patient, and you should always consult your physician so that the correct dosage can be prescribed. If you have been prescribed 800mg by your physician, you should take two 400mg tablets instead of eight 100mg tablets, as the tablet coating contains iron, and taking eight 100mg tablets will result in you taking too much iron. Never exceed the dosage prescribed by your physician.

What are the side effects of Imatib (Imatinib)?

Some side effects which may occur as a result of taking Imatib (Imatinib) include:

  • Nausea, vomiting or loose stools
  • Nasal congestion
  • Fatigue

Patients should note that this drug may also cause other more serious side effects. Consult your physician immediately if you notice unusual bruising or bleeding, weight gain, swollen limbs, breathlessness, yellowing of the eyes or skin or fever.
