What is Imiquad (Imiquimod) used for?

Imiquad Cream (Imiquimod) is used to treat anal or genital warts. It is also used to treat a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma or actinic keratosis. This causes rough areas of skin in people who have been exposed to a lot of sunshine over the course of their lifetime. The cream is an immune response modifier that encourages the body to fight these conditions.

How should I use Imiquad (Imiquimod)?

Imiquad Cream (Imiquimod) is applied at home over the course of several months. Compared to other topical treatments for genital and perianal warts, this medication has shown to produce less burning and skin irritation. Wash your hands before and after each application. A small amount should of cream should be put on the finger and then applied to the affected area. Allow the applied area to air dry.

What are the side effects of Imiquad (Imiquimod)?

When using Imiquad Cream (Imiquimod), some patients may take experience side effects. These include:

  • Swelling or redness on the treated area
  • Irritation, itching, or burning
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach discomfort, diarrhea
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Scabbing, crusting, erosion, or flaking at the site of application
  • Ulcers

Any side effects that worry you, are persistent, or are intense should be reported to your doctor. They may indicate more serious problems that require medical attention.
