What is Malirid (Primaquine) used for?

Malirid (Primaquine) is used to treat malaria or to prevent the disease from returning in patients who are infected with the disease. It is used on its own, or together with other drugs such as primaquine. This drug may also be used to treat a lung disease caused by fungus known as pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia.

How should I use Malirid (Primaquine)?

Malirid (Primaquine) tablets are taken orally. These tablets are usually taken once daily, or as directed by your physician. Taking them with food may help to reduce the risk of a stomach upset. This drug is normally taken for 14 days after leaving the area affected by malaria, and started during the final 1 to 2 weeks of your other treatment for malaria, or as soon as you have finished your other medication. However, this drug should not be taken for more than 14 days.

What are the side effects of Malirid (Primaquine)?

Malirid (Primaquine) may cause:

  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Appetite loss
  • Cramps
