What is Maxolon (Metoclopramide HCL) used for?

Maxolon (Metoclopramide HCL) is used to treat a variety of conditions. Patients suffering from diabetic gastroparesis (slow emptying of the stomach) are given this drug to treat the vomiting, acid indigestion and appetite loss caused by this condition. It is also given as a short term treatment for persistent heartburn, when other treatments have proven ineffective. Other uses include being given to patient undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy to prevent vomiting.

How should I use Maxolon (Metoclopramide HCL)?

Maxolon (Metoclopramide HCL) tablets should be taken exactly as prescribed by your physician. The dosage varies for each patient, and depends on a number of factors. Your physician will decide the correct dosage for you. Patients are sometimes told to take it 4 times per day, 30 minutes prior to eating, and at bedtime. The manufacturer advises that treatment should not last for longer than 12 weeks. Patients treating diabetic gastoparesis may be told to take it for 2 to 8 weeks. As this condition may recur, your physician may recommend that you start taking this drug as soon as your symptoms reoccur, and to stop taking it when you start to feel better.

What are the side effects of Maxolon (Metoclopramide HCL)?

Patients taking Maxolon (Metoclopramide HCL) may notice side effects, such as:

  • Restlessness, drowsiness, or fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Tenderness or swelling of the breasts
  • Changes in menstrual periods
  • An increase in urination

If you experience changes in mood, hallucinations, seizures or any other serious side effects, you should immediately consult your physician.

Please Note

This medication may cause a serious movement disorder known as tardive dyskinesia. Immediately consult your physician if you experience any uncontrolled body movements. Because of the risk of this occurring, patients are normally told not to take this drug for longer than 12 weeks.
