What is Melanocyl (Methoxsalen USP) used for?

Melanocyl (Methoxsalen USP) is given to patients in combination with a special treatment program involving controlled, supervised exposure to UVA light. This treatment plan is used to treat skin conditions such as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, vitiligo, severe psoriasis and other conditions. This drug works by increasing the skin's sensitivity to light, which can help to inhibit excessive growth of skin cells or to increase the amount of cells which produce pigments in the skin, known as melanocytes.

How should I use Melanocyl (Methoxsalen USP)?

Melanocyl (Methoxsalen USP) tablets are normally taken as part of a combined treatment which involves UVA light. Your physician will tell you the correct dosage required, and may also supervise your treatment. This drug is usually taken 2 to 4 hours prior to commencing UVA light treatment. You may take it with food, to decrease nausea. The amount of UVA treatment required varies for each patient, and will be decided by your physician. You may be directed to undergo this treatment 2 to 4 times per week, and less frequently as your condition improves. After treatment, you should avoid all exposure to sunlight for at least 48 hours.
