What is Potrate (Potassium Citrate) used for?

Potrate ER 1080 (Potassium Citrate) is used to treat renal tubular acidosis. This is a kidney condition which causes uric acid to build up in the body, causing symptoms such as kidney stones or gout. It may also be prescribed to improve heart function as it has also been shown to successfully regulate a patient's heart beat.

How should I use Potrate (Potassium Citrate)?

For best results, patients will usually be required by their physician to follow a strict diet while taking this medication. Potrate ER 1080 (Potassium Citrate) tablets are extended release, which means the medication slowly releases inside the patient's system after it has been digested. For this reason, tablets should be swallowed whole without being chewed, split, crushed, or dissolved in water. If not swallowed whole, the medication's effectiveness will be reduced considerably and the patient is likely to experience stomach discomfort.

What are the side effects of Potrate (Potassium Citrate)?

While taking Potrate ER 1080 (Potassium Citrate) you may experience nausea, stomach upsets, digestive discomfort, and/or diarrhea. Disclose all side effects to your physician, and do so promptly if any persist or bother you.

Contact your physician as soon as possible if you notice any of the following more severe side effects:

  • Persistent diarrhea or vomiting
  • Abnormal mood changes
  • Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Severe thirst
