What is Premarin (Conjugated Oestrogens) used for?

Premarin (Conjugated Oestrogens) is a mixture of estrogens (female sex hormones) which are used to treat menopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness and irritation, as well as hot flashes. These symptoms often occur due to a decrease in estrogen production by the body. Other uses for this drug include helping to prevent osteoporosis in post menopausal women, treatment of symptoms caused by low estrogen, and also being used to treat different types of cancer, such as breast cancer and prostate cancer.

How should I use Premarin (Conjugated Oestrogens)?

Premarin (Conjugated Oestrogens) tablets should be taken orally. The dosage may differ for each patient, and your physician will decide the correct dosage required to treat your particular condition. This medication is sometimes taken once per day, or else as part of a schedule that rotates, with estrogen being taken every day for a set period of time followed by another set period of time when estrogen is not taken. Patients treating symptoms of cancer may be told to take it 3 times per day.

What are the side effects of Premarin (Conjugated Oestrogens)?

Some side effects which may occur as a result of taking Premarin (Conjugated Oestrogens) include:

  • Pain or tenderness of the breasts
  • Muscle tightness or a tingling sensation in the arms or legs
  • A change in the patient's sex drive
  • Irritation of the vagina or vaginal discharge
  • Loss of hair or unwanted hair growth

Report all side effects to your physician. Other more severe side effects may also occur. Consult your physician immediately if you notice bulging eyes, appetite loss, hoarseness, severe stomach pain, weakness or any other side effects not mentioned here.

Please Note

Estrogens have been known to cause an increased risk of endometrial cancer. Your physician may tell you to take a progestin together with this medication to help reduce this risk.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Premarin (Conjugated Oestrogens). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
