What is Qlaira (Estradiol Valerate/Dienogest) used for?

Qlaira (Estradiol Valerate/Dienogest) is a combined birth control pill which contains two female sex hormones. Estradiol valerate is converted in the body into a hormone identical to the natural estrogen which the body produces. This makes this medication different from other oral contraceptives, which use synthesized estrogen. The other active ingredient, dienogest, is a proestogen. This medication is used to prevent pregnancy, as it can prevent the egg from being released, while also altering the consistency of the mucus in the cervix, and changing the uterine lining. Other uses for this medication include being used to stop heavy menstrual bleeding in women who also wish to take birth control pills.

How should I use Qlaira (Estradiol Valerate/Dienogest)?

Qlaira (Estradiol Valerate/Dienogest) contains 3 wallets of 28 tablets. Each wallet contains 5 different types of tablets. There are four different types of colored active tablets in total in rows 1 to 4, and 2 inactive white tablets in row 4. The dark yellow, medium red, light yellow and dark red tablets contain active ingredients, whereas the white tablets do not contain any hormones. As there are different types of tablets, it is important to consult your physician so that you are sure of how to properly take them. These tablets are normally taken once per day. When you have finished the 28 day cycle, including the 2 inactive tablets, you should start a new pack.

What are the side effects of Qlaira (Estradiol Valerate/Dienogest)?
