What is Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol) used for?

Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol) is given to patients to help prevent the occurrence of asthma attacks, and also to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This drug is also used to help prevent exercise induced asthma attacks. It is a type of bronchodilator, which is effective in treating these symptoms by helping the muscles in the airways to relax, thereby helping to improve breathing. Patients should be aware that this medication is not effective in treating a sudden asthma attack, and should never be used as a substitute for a quick relief inhaler.

How should I use Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol) ?

Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol) should be inhaled orally, using the inhaler provided. Patients should insert the mouthpiece into their mouth, and administer the spray by pressing down on the canister, after which they should inhale the contents by taking a deep breath. It is important to hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds. Adult patients are sometimes directed to use this inhaler twice per day, with one inhalation taken in the morning, and one in the evening. However, the exact dosage may vary for each individual patient, and it is essential that all patients consult their physician before using this medication so that the correct dosage can be prescribed.

What are the side effects of Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol) ?

Some side effects may occur as a result of using Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol), including:

  • Vertigo or headaches
  • Nausea or loose stools
  • Dryness in the mouth or irritation of the throat
  • Nervousness or sweating
  • Insomnia

Patients should immediately consult their physician if any other more serious side effects occur, such as pain occurring in the chest, a fast uneven heartbeat, uncontrolled shaking, breathlessness or other serious asthma symptoms.

Please Note

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.
