What is Tagon-6 (Tegaserod) used for?

Tagon-6 (Tegaserod) is given to women as a treatment for chronic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and whose main bowel problem is constipation and not diarrhea. It may also be used by patients who are younger than 55 years of age to treat chronic constipation. This drug is in a class of medications known as serotonin agonists, which works by increasing the action of serotonin in the intestines, thereby increasing the speed at which stools move through the bowels. It is only used in limited emergency situations, where a physician deems it to be absolutely necessary.

How should I use Tagon-6 (Tegaserod)?

Patients who are prescribed Tagon-6 (Tegaserod) tablets by their physician are usually directed to take one tablet twice per day. It should be taken on an empty stomach, just before eating. Patients with irritable bowel syndrome are usually told by their physician to take this drug for 4 to 6 weeks, and if there is an improvement in symptoms, the patient may then be instructed to take it for another 4 to 6 weeks. Patients with chronic idiopathic constipation should regularly seek the advice of their physician to determine whether or not to continue taking it. You should not discontinue taking this drug without first consulting your physician, as this may cause your symptoms to return.

What are the side effects of Tagon-6 (Tegaserod)?

Some side effects of Tagon-6 (Tegaserod) include:

  • Migraine or dizziness
  • Pain in the legs or back
  • Back pain
  • Joint pain
  • Insomnia

When you are using this drug, you should immediately consult your physician if any side effects persist or worsen, or if any other more serious side effects occur, such as severe stomach pain, bloody stools or persistent diarrhea.
