What is Tofranil (Imipramine HCL) used for?

Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride) is used in the treatment of depression and other mental disorders, as well as for chronic pain. It belongs to a class of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants, which work by helping to restore the equilibrium in the brain of certain naturally occurring substances, such as norepinephrine. This drug is also commonly prescribed to children to help prevent bedwetting. Some research has suggested that this drug may be of some use in treating ADHD or migraines.

How should I use Tofranil (Imipramine HCL)?

Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride) tablets should be taken orally, with or without food. Adults are sometimes directed to take this medication 1 to 4 times daily. However, your physician may start you out on a low dosage which may then be gradually increased. When this drug is used to treat bedwetting, physicians may direct children to take one tablet one hour before bedtime. However, it is important to note that all patients using this drug should consult their physician before taking it so that the correct and precise dosage can be prescribed.

What are the side effects of Tofranil (Imipramine HCL)?

Some side effects which may occur in patients taking Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride) include:

  • Blurred vision or headache
  • Sleepiness or dizzy sensation
  • Nausea, loose stools or stomach pain
  • An increase in weight
  • Increased perspiration

Patients should immediately consult their physician if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if they notice extreme changes in mood, unwanted breast milk production, swollen breasts, missed menstrual periods, muscle twitches, a decreased sexual ability, tremors, numb or swollen limbs or severe vomiting.
