What is Valcivir (Valacyclovir HCL) used for?

Valcivir (Valacyclovir HCL) is given to patients as a treatment for herpes zoster (also known as shingles) and infections caused by the herpes virus in children and adults including chickenpox, cold sores and genital herpes. This medication will not cure herpes infections, but it will reduce the pain and itching caused by these symptoms, while also helping sores to heal.

How should I use Valcivir (Valacyclovir HCL)?

Valcivir (Valacyclovir HCL) tablets should be taken orally. The dosage and treatment period depends on the condition being treated. Adult patients with shingles may be told by their physician to take this drug 3 times per day at 8 hour intervals, for a period of 7 days. Adults treating genital herpes may be told to take it twice per day for a period of 5 days. The dosage for all patients will be decided by a physician, and you must follow the instructions of your physician and only take the prescribed amount.

What are the side effects of Valcivir (Valacyclovir HCL)?

Side effects of Valcivir (Valacyclovir HCL) include joint pain, menstrual pain or a sore throat. Consult your physician immediately if you notice:

  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Seizures
  • Hallucinations
