What is Victoza (Liraglutide) used for?

Victoza (Liraglutide) is used with a suitable diet and exercise regime to control high blood sugar in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. However, it is not used to treat patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. This drug is similar to a natural hormone in the body known as incretin. It works by reducing the quantity of sugar produced by the liver, and by causing insulin to be released as a response to high sugar levels in the body. It may also slow down the emptying of the stomach and reduce appetite and contribute to weight loss.

How should I use Victoza (Liraglutide)?

Victoza (Liraglutide) comes in the form of liquid in a dosing pen, which is injected under the skin into the stomach, thigh or upper arm. Patients are usually directed to start out with a dose of 0.6mg per day. If your physician decides that the medication is suitable for you, your dosage may be increased to 1.2mg per day after one week. The maximum dose is 1.8mg per day. Always follow the instructions of your physician. A video is available here, with clear instructions on how to administer the medication:
