What is Aldactone (Spironolactone) used for?

Aldactone (Spironolactone) is used to prevent the body from absorbing excessive amounts of salt, and also treats low levels of potassium in the body. This drug can be used as a diagnostic aid, to determine whether the body has excessive aldosterone, which is a hormone used to help regulate the balance of salt and water in the body in the body. It is a type of potassium-sparing diuretic, or water pill, which is also used to treat fluid retention, cirrhosis of the liver, nephritic syndrome or to treat excessive hair growth in women.

How should I use Aldactone (Spironolactone)?

Aldactone (Spironolactone) tablets are usually taken once per day, in the morning. Some patients may be advised to take it twice per day. In order to avoid waking up during the night to urinate, patients are advised to take this drug before 6pm. Always follow the instructions of the prescribing physician, and never exceed the recommended dose. You may be given a low dose of this drug to start with, which may then be gradually increased by your physician.

What are the side effects of Aldactone (Spironolactone)?

Aldactone (Spironolactone) tablets may cause some side effects, such as:

  • A decreased sexual ability in males
  • Painful breasts
  • Increased hair growth
