What is Canditral (Itraconazole) used for?

Canditral (Itraconazole) is a type of antifungal known as a triazole. It is effective in treating fungal infections such as those affecting the fingernails or toenails. It can also treat fungal infections which start off in the lungs and spread through the body, yeast infections occurring in the mouth or throat and fungal infections in patients with fever. This drug may also treat other types of fungal infections and may be given to patients with HIV to prevent fungal infections.

How should I use Canditral (Itraconazole)?

Canditral (Itraconazole) capsules are normally taken 1 to 3 times per day, with a meal, usually for at least 3 months. However the dosage for fungal infections affecting the nails is different. For infections of the nails, it is usually taken twice per day for a period of 1 week, and then not taken for 3 weeks, after which it is then taken twice per day for 1 week. However it is important to note that when treating an infection of the nails, you may not notice an improvement until the growth of new nails occurs. This may take up to 6 months for fingernails, and as much as 1 year for toenails. Consult your physician if you believe the treatment is not working.
