What is Zidovir (Zidovudine) used for?

Zidovir (Zidovudine) is given to patients who suffer from HIV to treat and control their infection, and to reduce the risk of other HIV related illnesses. This drug is a type of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, or NRTI, which works by slowing down the spread of HIV in the body. Apart from the above mentioned uses, this drug is also sometimes given to pregnant women with HIV to prevent it being passed to an unborn baby, or to prevent infection in somebody who has come into contact with the virus.

How should I use Zidovir (Zidovudine)?

Zidovir (Zidovudine) may come in capsules or tablets. Both the capsules and tablets should be swallowed whole. It is sometimes taken 3 to 4 times per day. However some patients may be directed to take it 5 times per day. Follow the instructions provided to you by your physician. You should continue taking this drug if it has been prescribed to you unless told otherwise by your physician.

What are the side effects of Zidovir (Zidovudine)?

Zidovir (Zidovudine) may cause side effects, such as:

  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Dizzy sensation
  • Insomnia
