What is Aceret (Acitretin) used for?

Aceret (Acitretin) is a type of medication known as a retinoid, which is used as a treatment for skin conditions such as psoriasis, as well as other skin conditions. It works by preventing excessive growth of cells and the thickening of cells caused by psoriasis, thereby helping to reduce the formation of plaque, as well as reducing scaling and thickening of the skin.

How should I use Aceret (Acitretin)?

Patients using Aceret (Acitretin) will normally be supervised by a dermatologist while taking this drug, as it is usually only used for severe skin conditions for which other treatments have proven ineffective. Patients are normally given a course of treatment of 2 to 4 weeks. After this period, your physician may change your dose, depending on your response to treatment. Another 6 to 8 weeks of treatment is often required, in order for the full benefits to be noticed.

What are the side effects of Aceret (Acitretin)?

Side effects of Aceret (Acitretin) include:

  • Peeling or scaling of the skin
  • Itchiness or irritation of the skin
  • Weak fingernails or toenails
  • Loss of hair
  • Infection of the sinuses

This medication may also cause more serious side effects. There is a risk of hypoglycemia while taking this drug. Consult your physician immediately if you notice any side effects while taking this medication.

Please Note

This medication may cause birth defects. Women who are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant within the next 3 years of taking this medication should not take this drug. Discuss the use of reliable contraception with your physician.

A small amount of this drug may be present in the semen of male patients. It is unknown whether or not this will cause birth defects. Male patients should discuss the risks of this drug with their physician.

Do not donate blood for up to 3 years after taking this medication. Female patients should also not breastfeed for 3 years after treatment with this drug.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Aceret (Acitretin). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
