What is Aropax (Paroxetine) used for?

Aropax (Paroxetine) is a type of antidepressant. It belongs to a group of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This drug helps to treat the symptoms of depression by affecting certain natural substances in the brain, such as serotonin. It is also used to treat anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and a severe form of premenstrual syndrome, known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

How should I use Aropax (Paroxetine)?

Aropax (Paroxetine) tablets should be taken orally. As this medication may cause drowsiness, it is common for physicians to direct patients to take this medication once daily, in the morning or evening. However, the dosage varies considerably depending on the condition being treated. If this medication is being taken for premenstrual problems, you may be instructed to take it every day of the month, or else for the 2 weeks preceding your period. Always consult your physician before taking this medication so that the correct dosage can be prescribed to you, and never exceed the recommended dosage.

What are the side effects of Aropax (Paroxetine)?

Some side effects which may occur as a result of taking Aropax (Paroxetine) include:

  • Headaches, drowsiness or dizziness
  • Anxiety or restlessness
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea, diarrhea or constipation
  • Changes in weight
  • Decreased sexual ability

Consult your physician immediately if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if you notice changes in mood, thoughts of suicide, tremors, blurred vision, unusual bruising or bleeding, seizures or changes in the amount of urine. This drug has, in rare cases been known to cause a serious condition known as serotonin syndrome. Patients who use this drug together with other drugs, such as triptans and certain other antidepressants are at increased risk of this occurring.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, especially liver or kidney problems, and seizures, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Patients should be aware that taking antidepressants increases the risk of suicide or thoughts of suicide, especially in patients under 24 years of age. Consult your physician immediately if you experience any thoughts of suicide while taking this drug.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
