What is Phenergan (Promethazine HCL) used for?

Phenergan (Promethazine HCL) is given to patients as a treatment for allergic reactions, including hay fever, allergic rhinitis, allergic reactions affecting the eyes (allergic conjunctivitis), and other allergic reactions. This drug may also be used to treat motion sickness, and also be given before or after surgery to help the patient feel better. The active ingredient in this medication is a type of antihistamine, which blocks the action of a natural chemical called histamine, which is made by the body during an allergic reaction.

How should I use Phenergan (Promethazine HCL)?

Patients taking Phenergan (Promethazine HCL) tablets to treat allergies are sometimes told to take it 1 to 4 times per day, usually after meals and before bed. To prevent travel sickness, it is best to take it 30 to 60 minutes before you travel, and again 8 to 12 hours later. Longer trips may require a different dose. Consult your physician before you take this medication so that you can be properly advised on the best dosage required.

Some patients taking Phenergan (Promethazine HCL) may experience side effects, such as:

  • Drowsiness
  • Sleep disturbances

  • Ringing noise in the ears
  • Hyperactivity

You should inform your physician if any side effects occur, especially serious side effects such as hallucinations, uncontrolled eye movements or stiff muscles.
