What is Rcifax (Rifaximin) used for?

Rcifax (Rifaximin) is used as a treatment for traveler's diarrhea, occurring as a result of certain bacteria. It may also be used to prevent hepatic encephalopathy, (worsened brain function), occurring in adults with liver disease. This medication is an antibiotic, which treats traveler's diarrhea by fighting the bacteria responsible for causing it. However, this drug is not effective in treating bloody diarrhea, or diarrhea occurring with fever.

How should I use Rcifax (Rifaximin)?

Rcifax (Rifaximin) tablets should be taken orally. Patients treating traveler's diarrhea are normally told to take it 3 times per day for a period of 3 days. You should start to notice an improvement in your symptoms within 24 to 48 hours. If you are using it to prevent hepatic encephalopathy, you may be told to take it twice per day. You should continue taking it until you have finished the prescribed amount.

What are the side effects of Rcifax (Rifaximin)?

You may notice side effects when taking Rcifax (Rifaximin), such as:

• Bloating
• Feeling the need to urgently empty your bowel
• Feeling as though you have not completely emptied your bowel
• Inflammations of the hands or feet
• Pain in the joints

Consult your physician if your diarrhea does not improve or worsens.
