What is Risperdal (Risperidone) used for?

Risperdal (Risperidone) is an antipsychotic drug that is used in the treatment of mental and mood disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This drug may be prescribed to treat children and teenagers who suffer from autism, as it is effective in treating the behavioral problems associated with this condition. This medication is in a family of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. It works by restoring the balance of natural chemicals in the brain, known as neurotransmitters.

How should I use Risperdal (Risperidone)?

Patients should take Risperdal (Risperidone) tablets orally, with or without food. It is common for patients to be directed to take this medication once or twice per day. Patients should note that the exact dosage prescribed may vary. You should always consult your physician before taking this medication in order for the correct dosage to be prescribed. It is common for patients to be directed to take a small dosage at first, and to have their dosage gradually increased in order to allow the body to get used to the medication. It may take several weeks for the full effects of this drug to be noticed. Patients should never abruptly cease taking this medication unless they have been told to do so by their physician, as this may cause their symptoms to worsen.

What are the side effects of Risperdal (Risperidone)?

Some side effects which may occur as a result of taking Risperdal (Risperidone) include:

  • Runny nose
  • Drowsiness, fatigue or a spinning sensation
  • Upset stomach or constipation
  • An increase in appetite and weight
  • Decreased sexual ability

Patients may also experience difficulty sleeping, acne or anxiety. You should consult your physician immediately if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if you notice nasal bleeding, drooling, white patches inside the mouth or on the lips, shakiness, involuntary bodily movements, fever symptoms or seizures.
