What is Triomune (Stavudine/Lamivudine/Nevirapine) used for?

Triomune (Stavudine/Lamivudine/Nevirapine) combines 3 drugs that are commonly used to treat and manage HIV infections into one tablet. The active ingredients stavudine and lamivudine belong to a class of antiretroviral drugs known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, which slow down and inhibit the spread of HIV. The other acvite ingredient, nevirapine is a type of non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor which reduces the quantity of HIV in the blood.

How should I use Triomune (Stavudine/Lamivudine/Nevirapine)?

Patients who have been prescribed Triomune (Stavudine/Lamivudine/Nevirapine) to treat HIV should follow the instructions of their physician. Patients may first need to be stabilized on 200mg of nevirapine and demonstrate sufficient tolerance to it, as a lead in dose of nevirapine is usually required for a period of 2 weeks.

The dosage depends on the weight of the patient. Patients weighing less than 132lbs may be directed to take one Triomune 30 tablet twice per day, whereas patients weighing over 132lbs may need to take one Triomune 40 tablet twice per day.

What are the side effects of Triomune (Stavudine/Lamivudine/Nevirapine)?

When taking Triomune (Stavudine/Lamivudine/Nevirapine), you should inform your physician if you suffer from any of the following conditions or notice any of the symptoms mentioned:

  • Lactic acidosis (liver enlargement)
  • Peripheral neuropathy (nerve disorder affecting the hands and feet)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Loss of fat from face and legs
  • Liver failure

Symptoms of lactic acidosis can include vomiting, breathlessness and a feeling of weakness in the arms and legs. Tingling in the hands or feet may be signs of peripheral neuropathy.

There is a high risk of a hypersensitive reaction with this drug. Discuss this with your physician before you take this drug. You may need to be stabilized with nevirapine before you begin taking this drug.
