What is Careprost (Bimatoprost) used for?

Careprost (Bimatoprost) is used in the treatment of eye conditions, such as glaucoma. These eye drops are effective at reducing eye pressure, by helping to increase the flow of fluids from the eye. This in turn can help to prevent blindness and other eye conditions. It is also used as a treatment for inadequate eyelashes, or eyelashes that are too short, to help increase the length and thickness of the eyelashes.

How should I use Careprost (Bimatoprost)?

The application method for Careprost (Bimatoprost) depends on the condition being treated. If you are using this product to treat glaucoma, you should apply it to the eyes directly, using the dropper provided. To apply it to the eyes, tilt your head back, and pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch. One drop may then be applied into the pouch. You can close your eye, and press gently on the corner of the eye, next to the nose, for 1 to 2 minutes. This can help to prevent the medication from dripping out.

However, patients using this medication to treat short eyelashes should note that the method of application is completely different. The medication is not applied directly to the eye, and a special applicator brush, like the one available here should be used. Apply the medication to the applicator brush, and gently rub it across the skin on the upper eyelid. If any medication gets on the skin surrounding the eyelid, you should wipe it clean. However, it should not be used on the lower eyelid. Patients should take care not to get any of this medication in the eye, and only use this product as prescribed by their physician. It may take up to 2 months for the full benefits of the eyelash treatment to be noticed.

What are the side effects of Careprost (Bimatoprost)?

Some common side effects of Careprost (Bimatoprost) include:

  • Redness in the eye
  • Eye irritation
  • Excessive watering of the eyes
  • Sensitive eyes
  • Feeling as if there is something in the eye

Patients should immediately consult their physician if any of these side effects persist or worsen. Patients who use this medication for the treatment of glaucoma, and apply it directly to the eye should be aware that it may cause a brown discoloration of the iris. Consult your physician should you notice this occurring.

Patients who apply this product to the eyelid should note that hair growth may occur on the skin that surrounds the eyelid, or it may become discolored. The risk of this happening can be minimized by wiping clean any of this product that gets on the skin surrounding on the eyelids. Discuss all the risks of side effects, and proper application methods with your physician before taking this medication.

Please Note

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Careprost (Bimatoprost). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.
