What is Lumigan (Bimatoprost) used for?

Lumigan (Bimatoprost) is used to treat glaucoma, and to help reduce the risk of optic nerve damage or loss of vision associated with this condition. It works by mimicking the effects of natural chemicals in the body, known as prostaglandins. By helping to increase the outflow of aqueous humor from the eye of patients suffering from glaucoma, it can help to reduce intraocular pressure, thereby helping to prevent blindness. This medication is also used to help promote eyelash growth in patients whose eyelashes are too short.

How should I use Lumigan (Bimatoprost) ?

Lumigan (Bimatoprost) eye drops are applied directly to the eye for patients who are treating glaucoma, using the dropper provided. You may be directed to apply one drop to the affected eye or eyes per day. Follow the instructions of your physician, and be careful not to exceed the recommended dose. Always ensure that the dropper doesn't get contaminated, and avoid touching it.

When used to treat eyelashes that are too short, you must not apply it directly to the eye. Instead, you should use a single use applicator brush, like the one available here. It should only be applied to the upper eyelash, and never to the lower one. The usual dose is one drop applied with the applicator brush at the base of the eyelashes each evening. Care should be taken to ensure that the medication does not get in the eye or the skin surrounding the eyelid. If this happens, you should wipe it clean.

What are the side effects of Lumigan (Bimatoprost) ?

Some side effects of Lumigan (Bimatoprost) include:

  • Redness or irritation of the eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Dryness of the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Feeling as though there is something in the eye

Patients should consult their physician immediately if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if they notice changes in vision or inflammation of the eyelids.

This medication may cause the iris to become discolored when it is applied directly to the eye, such as when treating glaucoma. This effect may be permanent. You should consult your physician if this occurs. When applied to the eyelid to promote eyelash growth, it may cause hair to grow on the skin surrounding the eyelid, or discoloration of the skin. In order to reduce the risk of this occurring, you should immediately wipe off excess medication from the area surrounding the eyelid.

Please Note

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Lumigan (Bimatoprost). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
