What is Postinor (Levonorgestrel) used for?

Postinor (Levonorgestrel) is a type of contraceptive which is used after unprotected sex or if a condom breaks. This type of birth control is more commonly known as "the morning after pill". The active ingredient in this pill is a type of progestin hormone, which can prevent pregnancy by preventing an egg from being released, and also changing cervical mucus and the womb so as to make fertilization or implantation harder. This pill may prevent pregnancy in 80% of cases, and is most effective if taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex or condom failure.

How should I use Postinor (Levonorgestrel)?

Postinor (Levonorgestrel) tablets should be taken as soon as you can possibly take it after having unprotected sex. It is considered to be most effective if taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. It is important for patients to remember that if they vomit within 2 hours of taking this pill, it is necessary to consult a physician, as the tablet may need to be taken again. If your period is late by more than 7 days, you should consult your physician, as you may need to take a pregnancy test.

What are the side effects of Postinor (Levonorgestrel)?

Some side effects of Postinor (Levonorgestrel) include:

  • Fatigue
  • Dizzy sensation
  • Diarrhea
  • Changes in menstrual bleeding
  • Breast pain or tenderness of the breasts

If any other more severe side effects occur, you should immediately consult your physician.
