What is Prometrium (Progesterone) used for?

Prometrium (Progesterone) is a naturally occurring female hormone which is considered to be important for regulating ovulation and menstruation. This drug may be given to women who have not yet gone through the menopause but whose periods have stopped because of a progesterone deficiency in their body (a condition known as secondary amenorrhea). It may also be used by postmenopausal women as part of hormone replacement therapy, to treat menopause symptoms, and to prevent the thickening of the lining of the uterus, while also helping to decrease the risk of uterine cancer.

How should I use Prometrium (Progesterone)?

If you have been told by your physician to take Prometrium (Progesterone) capsules, you will also be told by your physician how often you need to take it. Some patients may be told to take it on a schedule which rotates. If you are treating endometrial hyperplasia, you may be told to take 200mg orally per day, for 12 consecutive days per 28 day cycle. After taking it for 12 days, you may be told by your physician not to take it for the next 16 days. However, patients treating secondary amenorrhea may be told to take a single dose of 400mg per day, for 10 days. These capsules should be taken at bedtime, as they may cause dizziness or drowsiness. It is important to note that the dosage given here is just a guideline, and the required dose will vary for each patient. Therefore, you must consult your physician before taking this medication so that the correct dosage can be prescribed.

What are the side effects of Prometrium (Progesterone)?

Commonly reported side effects of Prometrium (Progesterone) include:

• Breast pain
• Irregular vaginal bleeding
• Loss of hair
• Fluid retention
• Vaginal yeast infection

Report any side effects to your physician. Other more severe side effects may occur. Immediately consult your physician if you notice changes in vision, severe vomiting, dizziness or any other side effects not mentioned here.
