What is Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) used for?

Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) is a form of progesterone, the female hormone that helps with the regulation of ovulation and menstruation, and is prescribed for a variety of uses. It is sometimes given to women of child bearing age as a treatment for abnormal uterine bleeding, or to help women suffering from amenorrhea to restore normal menstrual periods. It may also be given to women undergoing hormone replacement therapy to prevent excessive growth of the lining of the uterus, or to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.

How should I use Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate)?

Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) tablets are taken orally. The dosage required and the strength of tablets which should be taken varies for each patient. Your physician will tell you the required dosage and strength of tablets to take. Some patients treating stopped periods or abnormal uterine bleeding may be told to take this medication once per day, usually for a period of 5 to 10 days during the second half of their menstrual cycle, or as directed by their physician. It is common for withdrawal bleeding to occur 3 to 7 days after you cease taking this medication.
