What is Susten (Progesterone) used for?

Susten (Progesterone) contains progesterone, which is a female sex hormone. This gel is used to treat infertility caused by an inadequate luteal phase and insufficient production of progesterone. It is also used in assisted reproduction, during in vito fertilization (IVF), to expand the cervix or to help maintain a pregnancy.

How should I use Susten (Progesterone)?

Susten (Progesterone) comes in prefilled applicators. The gel is applied directly to the inside of the vagina, using the applicator provided. Your physician will tell you the required dosage, and will also tell you when to start treatment, and for how long treatment is required. Patients are usually told to apply it 1 to 2 times per day. If you become pregnant, your physician may direct you to continue treatment for up to 12 weeks.

What are the side effects of Susten (Progesterone)?

Susten (Progesterone) may cause:

  • Cramps in the stomach, diarrhea, bloating or nausea
  • Acne or unwanted growth of hair
  • Hot flashes
  • Pain affecting the breasts or joints
  • Vaginal itching

Report all side effects to your physician. Other more serious side effects which require immediate medical attention include unusual bleeding from the vagina, depression or fever.
