What is Propecia (Finasteride) used for?

Propecia (Finasteride) is used by adult males to treat male pattern baldness. It works by inhibiting the production of a male hormone responsible for preventing hair growth. It is also used on its own or together with other drugs to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy, a condition which causes enlargement of the prostate gland, and urination problems.

How should I use Propecia (Finasteride)?

Propecia (Finasteride) tablets are usually taken by mouth, once daily. Patients using this drug to treat an enlarged prostate should note that it may take up to 6 months before an improvement in symptoms is noticed. Continue taking it unless told not to by your physician. Patients treating hair loss may need to wait 3 months or longer before any improvement is noticed. However, you should expect to notice the full benefits of treatment after 12 months. Continue taking this drug, otherwise newly grown hair may be lost.

What are the side effects of Propecia (Finasteride)?

Whether you use Propecia (Finasteride) to treat male pattern baldness, or an enlarged prostate, there is a risk of side effects, such as:

  • Being unable to have an erection
  • Decreased interest in sex
  • Reduced volume of ejaculation
  • Pain in the testicles
  • Feeling depressed

Consult your physician immediately if you notice changes in breast size or breast pain.

Please Note

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Propecia (Finasteride). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.
